Make floors smooth and even with self leveling epoxy coating
As the name implies, self leveling epoxy coating (also self leveling floor coating or self smoothing floor coating) is a form of coating which is used on various types of floors in order to make them smooth and even. They are usually applied on concrete floors but they are also an effective option on other substrates. They are one of the most popular forms of resin flooring; the smooth, seamless surface is ideal for industrial and commercial settings where there is a lot of vehicular or pedestrian traffic, but also for healthcare and hygiene environments where the lack of seams and cracks prevent the growth of microbes.
Self leveling floor coating is available as a polyurethane sealant as well as epoxy, and can be used for a wide range of environments and applications. In this article we look at the benefits and uses of self leveling epoxy coating and where to find specialists in New Zealand.
The benefits of self leveling floor coating
Resin flooring is a seamless, resistant and attractive floor coating option that has been adopted across industries, from commercial and industrial spaces to residential and domestic ones. Whether polyurethane or epoxy, there are many benefits to choosing a self smoothing floor coating, including:
- High gloss finish leads to increased brightness and safety
- Attractive colour range
- Chemical and heat resistance
- High scratch and impact resistance
- Variable thicknesses for versatile application
- Easy-to-clean, seamless finish prevents the growth of microorganisms in cracks
How a self leveling epoxy floor works for concrete
Self leveling flooring comes in two varieties – self leveling cement or concrete and self leveling paint or resin screed (also known as self smoothing floor coating or flowable resin flooring). Self leveling concrete floor uses a polymer-modified cement and gravity to create a level underlayment, while self leveling resin floor coating is poured onto a floor and spread across it, allowing the coating to smooth out over the floor profile. Self leveling resin flooring is stronger the thicker it is applied; for heavy and very heavy duty applications it should be applied at 4-6mm while medium to heavy duty applications require 2-3mm.
After a thorough substrate preparation, the self leveling epoxy coating can be applied to the floor. An epoxy primer is normally applied first, in order to ensure adhesion and even out any cracks or surface issues. The two components of the self-leveling epoxy are mixed and stirred, sometimes with the inclusion of an aggregate or particulate. Once a uniform consistency is obtained, the coating is ready to apply. Self leveling epoxy coating is spread with a trowel and a special spiked roller at a thickness of 2-3mm – under that thickness and the flooring will be marred by trowel marks and other wobbles. Once dried, you can apply a final top coat layer.
Applications of self smoothing resin floor
The ease of application and high performance of epoxy floors means they are used in a wide range of applications including, but not limited to, food and beverage production, logistics centres, industrial facilities, retail stores, showrooms, pharmaceutical production, warehouses, garages, and hospitals. Just think of the high gloss flooring at your local showroom. Below we look at three applications:
- Self leveling epoxy garage floor
Garages are places where damaging chemicals and oils are used on a daily basis, much of it ending up on the floor. For a concrete floor, these substances can seep in and destroy it. By adding a self levelling epoxy paint or polyurethane to the concrete, the floor becomes seamless, easier to work on, highly resistant to abrasion and impact, as well as hot tire pickup. Self leveling epoxy garage floors are one of the most popular garage options.
- Seamless self leveling hospital floor
Hospital floors are exposed to heavy duty cleaners and biological wastes every day. In order to prevent damage to the floor or the growth and buildup of microorganisms such as bacteria, a seamless flooring system is ideal. Self leveling epoxy floor paint can also be made with antimicrobial properties to actively fight microbes.
- Self leveling epoxy bar top /table top
Just because it is called self leveling floor coating does not mean you can’t think outside the box. These coatings are also regularly used to create a smooth, glossy finish for table tops, bar tops, and other highly used items in restaurants, for example. A self leveling epoxy bar top can look good in a kitchen too, a cheaper option for reviving a tired setup.
Self leveling epoxy for wood floors
Polyurethane is the resin finish of choice for wood floors, but that does not mean it is the only one. It is indeed possible to use a self leveling epoxy for wood floors but there is a big but – it will require far more preparation work that just using another finish. A wood floor comes with the extra issues of rough, uneven surface, previous gloss, gaps and holes which would let the coating through.
To make self leveling epoxy work for wood floors, an underlayment such as a concrete floor needs to be under the wood, and the wood needs to be entirely gloss free and gap free. The epoxy can then be applied over the top. It is not recommended however – the flexibility and UV stability of polyurethane make it more suitable for a wooden substrate.
